Too often we do not think about how to handle an illness during training, me included. This past week I was knocked out by a stomach virus, in bed for 2 whole days, the works - both ends and a fever. When I finally recovered I did a workout, in the pool, it was bad. I was weak and sore all over. I thought, it was definitely from the illness, and that the next workout would be better. Wrong. I was in the pool the next morning and just as tired, just as weak. Now I was worried.
I had a race the Sunday, I was hoping to use it as a good 'brick' workout originally, now I was hoping to just finish.
Race day, I rested most of Saturday, minus working in the garden(which is a different kind of workout), got up at 4:30am and drove to the event. I felt ok, well my back was sore as hell- I need a new mattress. This tri was an indoor swim, each participant entered a finish time and then it was a tiered start. I put down , 4:20 for 300 meters - not too fast well within my ability, well before I was sick. I was not too concerned with being slow but didn't want to over do it in the swim and have nothing left.
I hit the water and went out at an easy pace, passed several people - so I either swam well or they lied about their times. Got out and felt pretty good, back was now all loosened up. Made it to transition put shoes on and was off on bike.
I felt very good on bike for 3/4 of ride, then I got some very painful pains in my hip flexors - not sure what this is?? Finished fine, but would have liked to go faster. Here is where I need to train more.
Run time - I admit to being concerned. I got off bike changed shoes and was off, felt stiff and had difficulty standing upright for about first 1/2 mile. Then I loosened up and hit a nice groove. Had an average run but feel that I could have gone faster - now I know that feeling.
Overall, very pleased considering I was so sick and weak.
What did I learn about illness during training - GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO HEAL and REST!
