Well my first tri of the season is complete, the TRL - tri for life, put on by the Hempfield Triathlon Club was again a great event. This was my third consecutive year in the 6 year old event and it continues to be an outstanding early season race.
The 300meter swim is a very good distance swim - although every year there are 3 - 5 people who put in a time that just they just can never meet. The swim is a time trial, swimmers leave every 10secs and and have to submit their predicted finish time. The time includes a 50 yard run after the swim. Last year I started in the 11th position passed everyone and had the #1 time of the event - 4:29. This year I started in the 10th position, passed 4 people and finished #2 overall with a time of 4:20. I was a little disappointed as I had set a goal of 4:05. Passing the #2 swimmer prevented me from accomplishing this. #1 and #2 made the swim a very difficult event. #1 made 4 laps then had to rest on the wall. #2 was hanging on each wall and was a bigger man. As I was passing him, he inadvertently(I'm sure), kicked, grabbed, and pulled on me.
Transition #1, I never really care about my transitions, but I wanted to go a little faster this year and I did, a little anyway.
The bike, I was concerned about the bike this year, I only did 2 rides outside prior to this race, and both were last week. I rode on the indoor trainer using the Spinnervals, beginning the week of March 20. I rode 3-4 times a week leading up to the race. Overall I had a great ride, average pace was 20mph.
I did notice that the fresh morning air, quite filled with moisture, was tough on the lungs. I really need to ride more outside.
Transition #2, Kinda slow but not time killing slow, the two transitions could have netted me a minute.
The run, since this was the first true test of pushing it on the bike and then getting off to run, I was kinda worried. For the first 1/2 mile, my legs were cramp machines - my calves killed. I began to think I wouldn't be able to run at all??? But I figured, stick with it they will come around, and they did.
I averaged 7:27 for a 5k.
Finished 18th overall, same position as last year, guess some others got faster as well. I really love this race, not a lot of swag but a whole lot of good racing and afterward you can stop in the outlet shops in Lancaster.
